Maryland's first public charter school

Now in its 20th operating year, Monocacy Valley Montessori Public Charter School was the first public charter school in the State of Maryland. In 2018 MVMPCS earned, and has maintained, MSDE's highest 5 star rating on the MD State Report Card. Each year thousands of students seek entry into our Montessori schools through our online Lottery process. Our students benefit from dynamic and engaging visual and performing arts, physical education, and extracurricular programs.

Maryland's first Public Montessori high school

In February 2022, The Frederick County Board of Education granted approval for Monocacy Valley Montessori Public Charter School to expand to include grades 9-12, beginning in the 2023-24 School Year with 60 ninth grade seats. MVMPCS will be the first public charter high school in Frederick County, and the first Public Montessori high school in the State of Maryland.

Montessori Method & Curriculum

The Montessori Method is based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, and incorporates hands-on materials, multi-age classrooms, and non-competitive, self-directed learning. MVMPCS's High School curriculum fulfills all FCPS graduation requirements, and provides students with unique opportunities for choice, exploration, and depth in their education.

Real and Important Work

The Montessori Secondary curriculum provides the opportunity for adolescents to realize they are strong, worthy, and capable of effort. Montessori Secondary programs respond to the adolescent’s need to exhibit creativity, to problem solve, to take responsibility, and to claim independence. Ultimately, the programs support each student in finding a place in the community and in becoming a respectful, responsible, and ethical contributor to society. Source: American Montessori Society.
